This isn’t really a usual post for me but I wanted to reiterate how important it is for dangerous dogs to be kept on a lead.
On Sunday, I was out walking my dog Freddie with my mum. Two staffies approached off a lead. My mum told their owner that my dog is not good with other dogs but before the owner could grab them, one dog had grabbed each of Freddie’s front legs.
I managed to get one off and was holding that one as well as my dogs collar so my mum could get the other dog off him. The lady was just hitting her dog with the plastic bit of its lead. In the process of getting this dog off my mum also got bitten.
The woman was not apologetic- she was more trying to cover her back than anything. I was of course devastated- it sounds so stupid but I love my dog to death. He has been there through thick and thin. Thankfully two women came to help us out, getting the woman who owned the dogs details and helping calm us down.
We have contacted the police and dog warden who are currently investigating the case. The woman’s name was straight away recognised by the dog warden who said that a similar incident had happened a couple of weeks prior!! We were angry to say the least.
We took Freddie to an emergency vets where he got staples in one leg and lots of pain relief and antibiotics. Let’s just say the vets said he got lucky as one of the puncture wounds was very close to being a lot more dangerous. Poor Fred is okay, and starting to walk a lot better, but is feeling very very sorry for himself in his cone. My mum went to minor injuries and got some antibiotics for her bites on her hand.
I am so thankful that we are all safe and nothing serious happened. I love my parents so much and it was devastating seeing the effect that this had on both my parents and my dog. I just can’t believe that the woman kept her dogs off the lead, without a muzzle when they are known to be dangerous. If it had been one of us walking Freddie on his own it could’ve been a lot different story. It could’ve been a mum walking a dog with a small child and I would hate to know the outcome if that happened. I would just like to urge people to take the proper actions to prevent harm to other dogs. If your dog is going to go up to other dogs in anyway I would suggest keeping them on a lead. My dog is not viscous but will fight back if another dog comes up barking at him. We always have my dog on a lead. If your dogs are known for having bitten dogs before, I would also recommend putting a muzzle on. The dog will still enjoy it’s walk and still be able to explore but it will prevent situations like this, or worse from happening. Dogs are amazing animals but they are not toys. They are carnivores, they can attack. Don’t take the chance it’s just not worth it.
Please just be responsible!!!
